ROPERA® on track for success: The new standard for monocable ropeways in Italy, Austria and Switzerland

Innovative ropeway technology for efficient operation

With ROPERA®, LEITNER is systematically advancing monocable ropeway technology. The innovative system combines performance, sustainability and flexibility across all components. It is designed for low-noise operation, a high level of occupational safety, ease of maintenance and reduced life-cycle costs.
Several projects featuring the new system generation are now entering a decisive phase of construction.

Kronplatz I and II:
The first ROPERA® gondola lifts in Italy

The new GD10 “Kronplatz I” and GD10 “Kronplatz II” will be the first gondola lifts in Italy to feature ROPERA® technology.

Each of the two 10-passenger gondola lifts has a transport capacity of 3,250 passengers per hour. With a combined line length of almost four kilometres, they will serve as the main feeder lifts. The projects are currently in the final implementation phase. Electrical commissioning is scheduled for the second half of October 2026.

The key technological developments include larger sheaves, fewer horizontal deflection pulleys and lower forces acting on the station structure. In addition, the new hydraulic tensioning system with two cylinders provides a longer tensioning travel, while optimized accessibility simplifies maintenance work. A 45° station entry also improves comfort and safety during boarding and disembarking.
The installations also make a strong design statement. Both the station architecture and the EVO cabins feature Pininfarina design.

Patrullarve in Zermatt:
The first ROPERA® installation in Switzerland

Another significant project is taking shape in Zermatt. The new CD6C Patrullarve replaces an existing installation from the 1980s and is also LEITNER’s first ROPERA® installation in Switzerland.

Construction-site logistics are particularly demanding and as such all materials and components must be transported by helicopter. More than 100 helicopter flights are required for the assembly and positioning of the 16 line towers alone.

Despite these challenges, the project is progressing according to schedule. Construction work is advancing steadily and the installation is approaching its next important project phase: commissioning.

Schartenkogel-Express at Glungezer:
The first ROPERA® installation in Austria

With the construction of the detachable 6-seater “Schartenkogel-Express” chairlift, LEITNER is delivering the first ROPERA® installation in Austria. The project is being built in the Glungezer ski area in Tyrol and also marks the start of the collaboration between LEITNER and the regional operator.

The new installation replaces an existing lift and also provides access to a new viewpoint. The chairlift is equipped with the energy-efficient LEITNER DirectDrive and EVO Premium chairs with seat heating.

The Schartenkogel-Express therefore creates modern ropeway infrastructure that combines technical efficiency, sustainable operation and comfort for winter sports guests.
